The Penny Saver Shop was established in 90 years ago to serve both the community, and is under the authority of the Manchester Memorial Hospital, a part of ECHN. In 2013, $70,000 was donated to help the hospital to buy new equipment, make necessary updates and provide scholarships. Clothing is available to thrifty shoppers who want name brand clothing at less than mall store prices and to folks who are unable to provide coats and warm clothing to their families this season. One can find everything from Christmas decorations, New York times bestseller books, to kitchen items with names like Revierware to Osterizer.
Our regular patrons have noted recent changes in the shop due to the new focus by the four paid staff members and volunteers. We are striving to compete with some of the high end consignment and retail stores while still helping the community and the Hospital. To make these changes we are seeking volunteers who have marketing, merchandising ,accounting, computer and other business skills as well as those interested in retail sales, sorting and pricing. With a soft job market people who are currently seeking employment can use the opportunity to network, sharpen their skills and resumes. Having a glowing reference letter to add to your recommendations it is always a plus and employers are eager to see applicants who are willing to help out. High school and College Students find that they can meet their volunteer requirements as well as well as add the experience and reference letters to their college applications. You can create your own work program in conjunction with your advisor and store manager. Another way to help out is next time you take a dress out of the closet that is stylish but just not you, donate it and any other items that are no longer useful. Don't forget to get your form for a tax break. The time needed to volunteer need only be a few enjoyable hours a week with an enthusiastic staff, a 20% discount and the satisfaction knowing that you have done something to help someone else. Come help us meet our goal of making the Penny Saver the best thrift store!
