Improving Manchester Rail Trail and Homes for People in Need Among 12 Projects Supported by Hartford Foundation

12 projects in Manchester, worth $74,000, will be funded this month through the H. Louise Ruddell Charitable Fund at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.

Improvements to a portion of the Cheney Rail Trail in north Manchester and building materials for the annual  are among 12 projects funded this month by $74,000 in grants from the H. Louise Ruddell Charitable Fund at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.

A grant of $5,000 was awarded to the Manchester Land Conservation Trust to upgrade the base and widen a portion of the one and one-half mile Cheney Rail Trail it owns from West Middle Turnpike to 500 feet north of Hilliard Street. The tract was once part of the old South Manchester Railroad, which ran from the famous Cheney Mills to the main line of the New York New Haven and Hartford Railroad in the north end of Manchester.

“By enhancing this portion we will move closer to connecting the Cheney Rail Trail to the Charter Oak Trail and the Hop River Trail,” says Doug MacGillvary of the Land Trust. “There is much work to be done to meet the goal of a 15-mile loop trail through portions of Manchester, Vernon and Bolton.”
