Lady Indians Trounce Eagles 57-31

Perez leads all scorers with 20 points

Ashley Perez scored 20 points to lead three Manchester players in double figures as the Indians walloped Wethersfield 57-31 in girls basketball action Friday night.

Perez, a first team All-State selection last season, could have easily surpassed the 21 points she scored in Wednesday's 44-31 over Berlin, but coach John Reiser pulled her from the game with just over three minutes remaining in the third quarter. At the time of her departure, Perez had singlehandedly outscored the Eagles, 20-17.

"She's not 100 percent, she has a bad back," Reiser said. "She's tremendous shooting the ball, and then in the second half, Miofania Garcia and Meghan Cardarelli really stepped up."

Garcia and Cardarelli, who had combined for just two points in the first half, exploded for 14 and 11 points, respectively, after intermission.

The undersized Eagles hung tough in the early going, trailing by just four with five minutes left in the first half. Manchester's combination of speed and size eventually wore Wethersfield down, however, as the Indians ran off a 22-point third quarter en route to a 48-23 lead entering the final period.

"(Wethersfield) has a program that's used to winning, coming off some very good years," Reiser said. "They didn't quit, and their kids played hard until the end."

Morgan Murphy led the Eagles with 11 points, and also played well on the boards.

Manchester (2-0) looks to continue its winning ways Tuesday, hosting New Britain at 7 p.m.
