VIDEO: Cavey’s, Goodwin College Blend Cuisine With Culture

A new class at Goodwin College blurs the line between the classroom and the kitchen.

Most college courses don’t take place in the backroom of a fancy restaurant. But, then again, most college courses aren’t anything like Goodwin College’s World Foods and Culture course.

The class meets every Tuesday night at in Manchester, where students are first treated to a sumptuous meal from a particular region of Italy, followed by a lesson on different aspects of Italian culture, art and history.

“The course came along because it’s an Italian restaurant,” said the course’s instructor, Paul LaRocca. “…There are times when it’s the middle of the week and things are a little on the slow side, and for the school it’s a great way to introduce students to more than just the school environment.”

Although only in its first semester, the class has already proven so popular that roughly half the students in the course are staff of the college, which offers a unique opportunity for faculty to blend with students at the college.

“It’s a very non-traditional class and everyone that I’ve told has said ‘you are so lucky to get to go to Cavey’s’, which is amazing,” said Matt Welles, who works in the college’s Concierge Services department. “People are jealous.”
