Two Manchester Students Winners in Secretary of the State's Poster Contest

Sam Hedlund and Jack Dufresne, a pair of fourth grade students at Martin Elementary School in town, were recently named second place winners of the Secretary of the State’s 18th Annual Poster Contest.

All in all, Secretary of the State Denise Merrill honored 40 students from a field of more than 500 entrants for their posters depicting acts of good citizenship happening in their local communities. The winning posters can be viewed online by clicking here

“I always encouraged my own children to explore their imaginations, so it was wonderful to see young students from across Connecticut engage with their creativity, and produce beautiful posters,” Merrill said in a statement. “It was far from easy selecting the top three posters from each of the five Congressional districts; all entries were unique and expressive. But, I am so thrilled to have the award-winning pieces displayed in the Capitol building. Our young people can be an inspiration for what good citizenship looks like.”

As winners, Hedlund and Dufresne were honored along with the other students in a ceremony at the Old Judiciary Room at the State Capitol in Hartford.

The top five posters came from students in the following elementary schools: Wolcott Elementary School in West Hartford, Haddam Elementary School, Francis E. Korn Elementary School in Durham, Wolfpit Elementary School in Norwalk, and the Carrington Elementary School in Waterbury.
