MHS' Perez A Finalist For CT's Gatorade Player of the Year Award

The junior leads all Class LL players in points per game, and ranks near the top of most other statistical categories.

Manchester High School’s , a junior and the leading scorer on the 21-2 girls basketball team, is a finalist for the Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year Award.

The award recognizes the nation’s “most outstanding athletes” in all 50 states and the District of Columba for the sports of baseball, basketball, softball, track and field, volleyball, soccer, football and cross-country. The award is presented to the athlete judged to be the best in their state for each respective sport, while all state winners are then candidates for the national Gatorade Player of the Year Award.

Perez has had quite the season for the Indians, ranked third in the CIAC Class LL girls basketball tournament. Perez’s 23.6 points per game leads all Class LL players, according to statistics compiled by MaxPreps.com. She also ranks first in three-point field goals and free throws per game, second in steals and fourth in rebounds and assists. In a CCC semi-finals game, Perez also became Manchester’s all-time leading scorer, and she has now scored more than 1,350 points for the Indians.

Perez and the Indians have a first round bye in the Class LL tournament and are scheduled to play the winner of Tuesday’s Wilbur Cross at St. Joseph’s game on Friday at Manchester High School at 7 p.m.

The winner of the award for each state will be announced March 11.
