Manchester Seeking Donations for Backpack, School Supplies Drive

The annual backpack drive helps dozens of Manchester kids, ages 5-17, every year.

Summer may have just started, but it's never too early to start donating to the annual Manchester Backpack & School Supplies Collection.

The Manchester Human Services Division is accepting donations of school supplies in time for the 2013-14 school year.

According to a flier from the town's website, the supplies will be distributed to eligible Manchester families — who partake in the reduced lunch program — before the start of the school year. The items must be new and they are given to students from ages 5 to 17.

The Hartford Courant reported that 400 students benefitted from the program last year, a number that had doubled when comparing the recipients from when the drive first started six years ago.

Faith Tabernacle of Manchester gave the largest donation, giving roughly 200 backpacks already filled with school supplies, the Courant reported.

Donations are being collected at the following locations:

  • The Weiss Center, 479 Main Street, Manchester
  • The Human Services Office on the 1st Floor
  • Senior, Adult and Family Services on the ground level
The donations will be taken in from July 8 to Aug. 16.
