Manchester School Board Member Resigns; Takes Job With District

Board member Sarah Walton was one of 10 candidates for a job as a student support coordinator for the Manchester School District.

A member of the Board of Education has resigned after accepting a job as a guidance counselor for the Manchester school system.

Sarah Walton, a Democrat, will earn a $57,135 annual salary for a position as a student support coordinator at Illing Middle School, the Hartford Courant reported

Walton, who was elected in 2010 to the Manchester Board of Education, submitted her resignation after taking the job last week, and the board will likely appoint a replacement when it meets on Aug. 26, the Courant reported.

School policies do not prohibit sitting board members from applying for open positions within the district, a fact that was fleshed out as it became known Walton had applied for the position.

A Republican board member, however, said he favored creating a two-year waiting period to avoid any perception of volunteer board members switching to paid positions.
