Illing Middle School Briefly Evacuated Thursday Morning

Arthur H. Illing Middle School was evacuated for about an hour at the start of the school day Thursday, April 26, 2013, due to a suspected gas leak.

According to an email that Interim Superintendent Richard Kisiel sent to the Board of Education, the suspected leak was coming from a unit on top of the building.
Students and staff evacuated the following fire drill procedures, while the fire department and Connecticut Natural Gas responded. The unit was shut down, according to the email.

"Overall, the situation was handled with safety and security in mind," the email stated. "Students were cooperative and responded to adult directions."
