Civil War Lecture

A Civil War lecture will be given at the History Center, 175 Pine Street. Historian and author Richard Meyer will present Why the Civil War? -- reflecting on the questions; what were the early causes of the Civil War? What led up to the start of the war in 1861?

In his lecture, Meyer will discuss what caused the North and the South to diverge in their economics, social norms and politics – a division that eventually ended in war. He will lay the ground work for an understanding of both positions in the debate, beginning in Colonial times.

Meyer, a retired engineer, is active in the Granby Historical Society, the Connecticut Gun Guild and the Hartford Civil War Round Table.
