Who Won the Final Obama-Romney Presidential Debate?

The third presidential debate, moderated by CBS' Bob Schieffer, ended with sparring on foreign policy. Connecticut residents reacted real-time in a Patch live chat.

President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney duked it out in the last presidential debate of the 2012 election season on Monday, sparring on foreign policy issues ranging from Iran's nuclear program and fair trade with China to the violence in Libya and Syria.

Military spending was also a frequent point of contention throughout the debate, which was hosted by Lynn University in Boca Raton, FL.

The sit-down debate, moderated by CBS’s Bob Schieffer, was supposed to be centered on foreign affairs, but there still were stretches when the discussion turned to the domestic impact of overseas military spending.

Did you watch the debate? Who do you think won? Tell us in the comments!

Patch hosted a lively statewide Live Chat during the debate that served as a digital gathering place for state political junkies. We also pulled comments in from Twitter. Here are a few of the highlights.

Thomas:

Obama's biggest advantage in FP will be that Gov. Romney will have a hard time to explain what he would do differently in external relations with Iran or Syria. In Iran at least, we've laid down crippling sanctions that will (hopefully) negate the necessity of military action. If Gov. Romney advocates more invasions, he's going to come off as a new Republican WarMonger.

Tiffany:

"Go after the bad guys" Yea good job sounding like a 5-year-old.

Klair Waters:

Mitt is hitting hard and keeping Obama on topic.

Gerald:

I don't think Romney is taking this Seriously!

Thomas:

Governor Romney keeps criticizing for not "leading", but I haven't heard him suggest anything other than vague platitudes....

Klair Waters:

Mitt is right...there has been NO leadership for the last 4 years.

Craig:

Enough stories, what's there plan. A.B.C. on everything? So far they are not explaining how these promises will be carried out

Angela:

This is foreign policy, Mitt. Let's move on from your economy.

Tiffany:

Romney just said "human rights" doesn't that include WOMEN'S RIGHTS?? He's flip flopping

Sam:

Neither candidate has a good vision for our country. both just want to spend more on the backs of the taxpayers.

jay:

HaHa, a game of Battleship. Obama's on fire in this one

Thomas:

We have fewer cavalry brigades today than we did in 1865!

Sam:

Neither of them is in support of ending the wars. Why don't they just say that?

Jing:

Obama is pulling out all the guns

Klair Waters:

Let's all go to Walmarts and help build China's military and economic strength to peak performance.

Gerald:

Obama won this FINAL debate!

Guest:

Romney is still going to be our next president.

Sam:

I think Romney won, more class, less defensive. Obama came off like a brat

heretolearn:

So Romney just looks like a sleeze ball, everything he says he says with a smirk.

B A Dragon October 23, 2012 at 12:35 pm
Mitt's smirk annoyed me. Obama at least has explanations for his actions and Mitt still hasn't explained any of his plans. Obama was right in pointing out Mitt's inconsistencies. One day Romney wants to bomb somebody or kill them and another day he wants to be friends. I think the President did a better job, however I'm sure there will be a partisan split in opinion. Frankly, the Moderator did the best job of all!
Kris Viens October 23, 2012 at 01:31 pm
Correct! This debate at least had a good moderator. It seemed like Romney & Obama respected him & listened this time instead of all 3 speaking at the same time. I honestly still don't know who I'm voting for. I believe Obama won the last 2 debates. Romney looked like an idiot with his smirks. He had little to debate Obama about when he said he would have done the same thing & agreed with The Presidents plans on several things. Yes, Romney kept mentioning "the website" instead of actually stating what how policies are. And like Obama said, he's looked at the website many times. It doesn't mean Romney's plan will even work
Happy to be a DEMOCRAT FOR LIFE! October 23, 2012 at 02:39 pm
Obama was fantastic!!! Unfortunately he has a battle with the House with all the fillabustering that the Republicians do, how is he going to fix everything. I just hope that the Democrats can take back the House and hold the Senate. Then we can get some work done.
Long time resident October 23, 2012 at 02:48 pm
I know, lets elect Obama as President of our debate team!!! And then, get serious and elect Romney as President of our country. Four years of failed leadership cannot be erased by fast talk, and a failed administration is what we currently have with Obama.
Danno October 23, 2012 at 03:04 pm
Great Idea!! Well said!
Emily October 23, 2012 at 03:05 pm
I have been hoping the exact opposite. I dont really care who wins the office of President as I will be voting for Gary Johnson with a clear conscience, but I pray the Dems lose the Senate and lose even more seats in the house. At least here in Connecticut there is a better than average chance a Senate seat will go to a Republican and hopefully at least a couple of house seats will go Republican.
suzmar October 23, 2012 at 03:51 pm
He told people to refer to his website due to time constraints. You should take the time to check it out. At least he has plans, I've heard nothing from Obama except more of the same for the next 4 years. I don't see many positives from his last 4 years: adding $6 trillion to our national debt, which most economists agree is our largest national security threat, unemployment still at 8% with more than 23 million out of work, a decrease in personal incomes, huge taxes looming next year, and many more regulations. fees. laws, and bureaucracy. This is a president who cannot bring the two sides together, he cannot get a budget produced that either side can accept, does not understand business, and has only caused more divisiveness in this country. We need a leader who will bring us together and understands that a strong economy will make a strong country!
Lora October 23, 2012 at 04:30 pm
Have you ever heard of the saying, "you can tell a lot about a person by who he hangs out with or surrounds himself with"? We all know that Obama surrounds himself with these so called "CZARS" who's beliefs revolve around socialism. So, by association, this makes Pres. Obama a socialist. I have one question, how can a socialist leader solve the jobs crisis(high unemployment) and the countries amazing spending deficit, in a capitalistic country? Obama thinks government is always the answer but Pres. Reagan and our Founding Fathers would agree that too much government will lead to a HUGE problem. Romney is the only obvious choice to lead our country in the right direction.
GG October 23, 2012 at 04:56 pm
Last night was the Etch-a-Sketch moment for Governor Romney. He came across very hawkish in the Republican primary debates. Now it is time for him to shift to the center and come across as much more cautious. To me that explains why he often agreed with President Obama's past courses of action. My guess is that if he is elected, he'll follow a very similar diplomatic course of action that the Obama administration has followed. There are simply no easy answers to solve the mid-east problems.
Maria Giannuzzi October 23, 2012 at 05:42 pm
It might be helpful if you understood what socialism is before accusing someone of being a socialist.
Ah, guilt by association. Just like the McCarthy witch-hunts. Is socialist the new communist?
Maria Giannuzzi October 23, 2012 at 05:49 pm
Is Mitt Romney George Bush III? Let's see, tax cuts, neo-con saber-rattling in the Middle East, no health insurance for 40 million Americans.
James Bond October 23, 2012 at 06:55 pm
Who cares who won.it 's just a ploy to keep your minds off the fact that neither one has a clue as to what to do AND most of the things they say they'll fix they don't have to power to do so. Both parties know that we have more pressing issues on our minds, like our families and day-to- day lives. Once the election is over it will be back to the same old same old, thus who is President won't really matter and we the people won't care either. Is Wal-Mart open so I can buy cheap foregin goods that keep Americans out of work? Fix it Mr. President so I don't have to take responsibility, but can complain about jobs. We're nothing but hypocritical babies and we should all have our inner child"s a$$ kicked.Or wait and let China do it.
Rant has now concluded, back to the who won stupid question!

Obama is a liar. Please click on the link below to read an article about his distorted jobs numbers. Do we really want another four years of this insanity?

Both Candidates Won, We Lost.
Kaptainsteve October 23, 2012 at 10:07 pm
Maria,
Your response "Just like the McCarthy witch-hunts. Is socialist the new communist?" implies that being called a "socialist" is a bad thing? Is it? Do socialists feel that their doctrine is bad? Is it wrong to call someone who supports politicians (and therefore their policies), like Obama a "socialist" when it was Obama himself who said "he believes in spreading the wealth around? How is this much different from Karl Marx's credo "from each according to his ability, and to each according to his need?" It isn't much different. It's the same. Spreading the wealth around is socialism. Obama is a socialist and therefore, by extension, so are those who support him, his views and policies. Calling socialists "socialists" is not automatically wrong or bad, sometimes it's just plain accurate. Sometimes it's true, and sometimes the truth hurts.
Cathleen Higgins October 23, 2012 at 11:30 pm
No doubt both care about the American people. I honestly don't believe either will be able to fix this country in the next four years. Unfortunately
Maria Giannuzzi October 24, 2012 at 01:41 pm
If you are going to call someone a socialist, at least look up the term in the dictionary. People throw around the words socialist, communist and Marxist in order to cause fear and crucify those they do no like or do not agree with. McCarthy conducted his witch-hunts either because he was trying to get in the national spotlight or was mentally unbalanced. Take your pick.
Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont has admitted he is a Democratic Socialist similar to the Democratic Socialism of Sweden. Apparently, the voters of Vermont disagree with the right-wing fear-mongers. We had a progressive system of taxation in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. It spread the wealth around. Would you call Dwight Eisenhower a socialist? Instead of relying on right-wing propaganda, look at our economic and tax policies in the 40s, 50s, and 60s.
Maria Giannuzzi October 24, 2012 at 01:43 pm
Mr. Bond has a point.
Kim Aliczi October 24, 2012 at 02:40 pm
I couldn't have said it better myself.
Nichole October 24, 2012 at 05:31 pm
Maria, what you are saying is right on. Dwight Eisenhower was defiantly not a socialist. Kaptain steve has a point also, being a socialist is not necessarily wrong or bad. Being a republican is not wrong or bad either. Our country has stood strong on the reason that we have a two party system representing the many diverse onions of Americans that stand on either side. However, I do think we begin to identify ourselves so much with one side that we close our ears to the views and ideas of the other. The successful progressive system of the 40's and 50’s is a foundation that Mitt Romney wants to instill yet again. I believe this is the basis of his job platform, and education platform for that matter. This is the industrial society that works the same job under the same unions. Take coal for example. This will create the same system of work it did in those days. This system might work if the housing market was reconstructed and people could actually afford to live this way. Mortgage costs have gone up to 60% of most people’s wages. There is no way this type of system would work in today's economy. There are tiers of problems that have to be adjusted for any other to work. To just take in to focus the main concern of most American’s, jobs, but not look at the spectrum of conditions relating to this downfall will land us in the same boat.
Nichole October 24, 2012 at 05:45 pm
On another note I haven't heard anyone talk about the environment, other than the flop of the green job expansion.
Is the environment only a concern for the hippies and extremists now? I hate to break it to you people but have you forgotten no earth, no life. There will no longer be concern of jobs or housing or education or foriegn policy. We worry about nuclear bombs being built to be thrown to diminish us, yet forget the true threat of our place on this planet. What a joke. Mr. Barak, even if you don't agree or like it, took the chance to reform our energy system to try and reconstruct the future of our safety; a threat more real than any terrorist group that we face. Now I look at him, pigeon holed by money driven orthodox republican minds; transforming into the same being. He is behind fracking and creating jobs through unclean energy. I know that we all utilize the technology that calls for these sources of energy, and i would be a hypocrit if I acted like I don't. Either way I think we are doomed. There is nothing Mitt or Obama can do about it. Change must be on a bigger scale. It is time for us to stop being pawns and make a personal change on a daily basis. Lets take some social, economic, and environmental responsibility. The government is not the solve for everyone's problems. Rant took some turns and twists, but is now concluded.
Maria Giannuzzi October 24, 2012 at 08:08 pm
I strongly disagree that Mitt Romney wants a progressive tax system similar to the one that existed in the 1950s. Why do you think all those wealthy individuals in Boca Raton gave him $50,000? They want to pay less taxes, not more. My understanding is that the highest tax rate in the fifties was 90 percent. I would not support that tax rate, but surely, surely the wealthy can pay a 3-5 percent increase in their present taxes.
Maria Giannuzzi October 24, 2012 at 08:08 pm
$50,000 each.
Cari October 24, 2012 at 09:06 pm
Maria- Don't forget all the wealthy people, hollywood elite and wall street executives that paid to attend President Obama's dinners and contributed to his campaign. If you are going to point out who contributed to Governor Romney then you need to be fair in pointing out the same which applies to your candidate President Obama.
Jim G. October 24, 2012 at 10:16 pm
A workable flat-rate tax would be around 20% although most proponents claim 17% will work. That will probably triple your taxes and slash the one-percenters by half to three quarters or more. Sure that's what you want?
Kaptainsteve October 25, 2012 at 01:50 am
Maria, wasn't Obama campaigning/debating just the other night on lowering taxes? Wasn't Obama's postition on foreign meddling and "terror" the same tough-talk as Romney's? Doesn't ObamaCare leave approximately 30 million uninsured? http://cnsnews.com/news/article/cbo-obamacare-will-leave-30-million-uninsured
Obama and Romney sound the same to me. Does it really make a difference who you vote for if you vote for either of the two? Nope, it really doesn't. They support the same things.
Kaptainsteve October 25, 2012 at 01:59 am
Maria,
When I said being a socialist isn't bad I was disingenuous and trying to make a point to make you aware that this is what you implied. I believe that you responded like it was a pejorative knowing, deep inside, it is a severely flawed doctrine. Socialism is not bad ONLY when all the participants are there VOLUNTARILY and can leave or cease participating VOLUNTARILY, otherwise, it is simply a euphemism for slavery. Whether you call it Marxism, Socialism, Communism or Collectivism, it's basically all the same thing, SERVE THE STATE. Collectivism has killed between 100-200 million innocent people in the 20th century alone (depending on who does the counting). Mao killed over 50 million and Stalin (many claim) nearly the same just to name two of the most famous adherents. The same Mao said China could afford to lose 2 or 3 hundred million people and same Stalin who said 1 or 2 deaths is a tragedy, 3 or 4 a statistic. (I admit that different variations of these sayings exist and it's hard to nail down which is THE precise or most accurate versions). Make no mistake about it, socialism is a bad word, and this has been unfortunately, proven.

Is REVENUE is really the problem here folks?
You really dont' think that they get enough to run this country, you remember, the country that was established with the credo of protecting our "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness?" Revenue is NOT the problem, CORRUPT CRONY POLITICS/BANKSTERS/CORPORTATION ARE. The debt is now over 16 Trillion yet you think we need to dig up the pennies that fell behind the coach cushions and send them in to these criminals??? You've got to be kidding yourselves, 'cuz you ain't kidding anyone else.
Nichole October 26, 2012 at 09:47 pm
Suzmar,
Who do you think writes that website? Mitt Romney is just sitting around in the middle of a campaign, perfecting his website? No, one of his word savvy, media manipulative invisible men takes on the task. My theory is if you can't answer a question with thoroughness and confidence, in person on the spot, you have no right to be up there in the first place. Referring us to his website is a cop out and quite frankly it makes him look incompetent.
Nichole October 29, 2012 at 03:38 pm
I pay 15% now, and unless you’re in the lower quartile, most of us pay close to that. I have been setting my own path, and plan on ending up in a place where I make a wealthy sum. I don't think after all the hard work I should have to pay my fair share X25. I get it, the country needs roads and good schools, so it’s just the way it has to be. The top one percent of wage earners in this country pay for twenty-two percent of this country. Let’s not call them names while they’re doing it, is all I’m saying. I don't agree with the silver spoon fed a-holes that have never raised a finger, getting any sort of deals; but I would be furious if I worked to get where I was to give way more than my fair share to a corrupt tax system. Have you been to the bottom? Have you seen the type of people that leach down there? It may sound harsh, but a few of my family members are the bloodsuckers and I'm sick of seeing the systems drag. It is easy to talk like a humanitarian until you see firsthand, the abuse of the system from the people who use it. The middle class suffer this system of angry rich and entitled poor.
