Upscale Restaurant and Wine Bar Planned for Mall Area

Plans for the new restaurant include indoor seating for 291, an outdoor patio that can accommodate another 101, and a spacious bar and wine tasting area.

Another noticeable vacancy could soon be filled in the area around the , as the town's Planning and Zoning Commission is reviewing an application for an upscale restaurant and wine bar to move into the site of the former Hops restaurant at 110 Buckland Hills Dr.

The new restaurant, known as the Market Grill, would be able to accommodate 291 patrons indoors, and would include a 72-seat bar and a separate wine tasting area. Plans also call for a 54 foot by 24.5 foot patio area that could accommodate 101 patrons with its own separate bar. A copy of the plans have been attached to this article as a PDF.

The applicant is Helmar Wolf, president of the Mill Restaurant Group, which also owns the Mill on the River Restaurant in South Windsor. Wolf did not immediately return a call for comment Friday afternoon.

The Planning and Zoning Commission will review the application as part of its Monday, June 18 meeting at 7 p.m. in the Lincoln Center Hearing Room, 494 Main St.

I agree Kathi: One thing Americans don't want to see is Empty Buildings just standing unoccupied in a BAD ECONOMY! (It's depressing).

Alot of new restaurants happening in Manchester...while the Mall is certainly going to get their share of new business...Main Street is really changing. Look at what is happening right now... ...New BBQ in the old Glaziers store. ...A food entity looks imminant for the old Tuxedo Shop... ...Landmark just changed owners ...a new Vietnamese retsurant is opening in the spot across from us at Mulberry Street. ..Beller's is moving back to where they belong... and...The recent "Strollin on Main"...was a huge success....absolutely superb. With all these new/changing businesses...there is room for all and a great big welcome to anyone who has the energy and drive to start their own ...the American Dream is alive and the satisfaction of knowing it can still be done should make all of us feel good about business today... ...now if we can get those wingnuts in Washington (all parties)to realize that the key to turing this country around is to support local... small business owners...maybe it will al turn out OK. Anyone listening? Bob Sulick TheMulb.com "Meet Me at the Mulb!"

PS...I know Bellers is not a restaurant...but Ozzie Osgood gave me drum lessons starting around 1967 and my ability to annoy my parents was cemented with that decision...I still have the drums Ray sold me.

Review of Market Grille. Start with the good. Very attractive interior with great views especially from the bar area. Nice outdoor patio with gas firepit. Burger and fries were delicious but expect to pay top dollar for it. The bad. Service was horrible. They have not worked out the kinks yet. Waited half an hour before we were served our drinks and it was not overly crowded. They offered us a complementary desert then charged us for it. Also charged us double for one glass of wine then it took another 20 minutes for them to correct the bill. Our waiter seemed inexperienced and overwhelmed and no one seemed to help him out. Total time for a burger and drink 1 hour 45 minutes. It was so bad that for the first time in my life I did not leave a tip. We were not the only ones experiencing problems. We noticed another couple got up and left because the service was so poor. Not what you expect when you are paying $13 for a burger. I assume start up issues are not uncommon, but the customer shouldn't notice.

Market Grille is a beautiful new addition to the Buckland Hills area. The outdoor patio with the firepit overlooking Hartford is something that the area needed. This a top dollar restaurant and not a quick hamburger and beer joint, but it's also a place you can go after work for drinks and appetizers or after a movie for dessert. Plan to spend time here...plan to enjoy the ambiance and the whole experience that you get when you visit. All new openings have kinks to work out and nothing showed while we visited. The owners and General Manager were there and present on the floor and making sure everything ran smoothly and I admired them for this instead of just hiding behind the scenes. Everyone seemed to be owning a piece of the evening...meaning that everyone worked together to create what was one of the best dining experiences I have had in a long, long time. Way to go Market Grille...you are now a favorite in our book!
