Malloy Helps Break Ground on Parking Improvements at MCC

The $3.75 million project will see a number of safety and security upgrades made at one of the parking lots at Manchester Community College.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy was in Manchester on Monday to help break ground on a state-funded project to improve one of the parking lots at Manchester Community College.

The project, which carries a price tag of $3.7 million, will see the campus' East Lot completely renovated and restored, which includes 260 new parking spaces, new high efficiency LED lighting, the installation of a new perimeter road to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety, and other safety and security improvements.

The lot, which dates to 1984, was already sorely in need of repairs before Winter Storm Alfred caused significant damage to it, according to school officials. The project also includes a connection to the East Coach Greenway to provide better bike access to the college, the installation of rain gardens and the construction of eight electric car charging stations.

"One thing that can never be compromised is the safety of our students," Brian Nwafor, the president of MCC's Student Government Association, said of the work.

Malloy said investments in Connecticut's infrastructure and education system, such as the MCC project brings, were important to help restart the state's struggling economy and create jobs. The project, which is expected to be completed by early November of this year, will create an estimated 50 construction jobs.

Malloy also visited a pair of local businesses in Manchester and South Windsor on Monday, touting the state's Small Business Express Program as a key economic engine.
