Broad Street Parkade to Face Wrecking Ball Monday

A ceremony to kick off the demolition is slated for 8:30 a.m. Monday, May 7.

Wanna see the ? All you have to do is show up bright and early first thing Monday morning.

The town will be holding an informal ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Monday at the parkade site on Broad Street to, well, celebrate the beginning of the destruction of the Broad Street Parkade, a dilapidated former shopping plaza that has been vacant for years which many in the community have come to regard as an albatross and a blight on the town.

"This is an event to celebrate the start of demolition of the Broad Street Parkade," said Senior Planner Gary Anderson. "The Mayor and Chair of the Redevelopment Agency will speak and the first chunk of the building will be taken down."

Monday's event is largely ceremonial, as the entire demolition project is estimated to take about six weeks, but there will no doubt be many in town glad to see a wrecking ball finally taken to the old Broad Street Parkade.
