Board of Directors Could Decide Fate of Nichols Properties Tuesday

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Lincoln Center Hearing Room, 494 Main St.

The Manchester Board of Directors is scheduled to meet Tuesday evening for one of its regular meetings. One of the items on the agenda could decide the fate of the blighted Nichols properties on Broad Street.

The town is in the process of foreclosing on the properties, but the Board of Directors has an item on its agenda to "resolve three tax foreclosure appeals" for a payment of $62,500.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the Lincoln Center Hearing Room, 494 Main St. The full agenda can be viewed here

RurRo--- I see where this is going, landowners will pay the 63, promise the town they will clean it up, BOD will be blinded by dollars and we will have this feral cat palace in the same condition for the next 10 years. BOD--do not take the word of untrustworthy landowners. Knock it all down, make the landowners pay for that and make them pay their taxes as well. Don't be blinded by short term monetary "gain" that in the long run will continue to depress local real estate values and cause an overall drop in money coming into the town. BOD, DON'T BE TRICKED!

I can see a real problem with that, Frank. You would have to serve notice on the owners, go to court, and wrestle with motions etc. You can TRY to compel the owners to pay, but it will be expensive and time-consuming.

They have already taken the owners to court, it's been empty for ten years and they have been in court with owners for a year. Leaving the unhealthy, dangerous, and unsightly buildings the way they are shouldn't be an option and BOD shouldn't trust the owners to live up to any promises they make is all I'm saying. It's too expensive to the town to let the building remain like that. If the owners were going to be responsible they would have been respondible for the last ten years.

I can say what should not be done with the land. 1. Do not allow heavy traffic retail in the area because the roads around it can't handle the traffic and it lacks proximity to the highway. 2. Do not allow "give aways" to any constituent group like Bennet Housing. If it is sold for apartments etc... Do not prohibit market rate apartments. ALL the taxpayers bought the land and cleared it, ALL should benefit. 3. Do not allow it to be taxen off the tax rolls unless some other town assest is sold to replace the value.

What those buildings need is a bulldozer, stat! Enough is enough already. Seize it by eminent domain if need be, whatever it takes, but tear it all down. And once that is taken care of, drive the bulldozer over to Guido's Car Hop and then the vacant Chinese Buffet.

The Chinese buffet is reopened now somehow for some reason.

Oh I read another article on this and it looks like the BOD is using this money to pay off the property owners so that they will go away, stop causing court drama, and the town can get rid of the buildings. I LOVE IT! looks like I was wrong to be nervous about the town getting cold feet on dealing with the issue. Go BOD, awesome, let's clean it up.

Hi Folks,
Yeah, the $62,500 is basically to purchase the properties for the town, which would then be able to do whatever they wanted with them, which I'm assuming would be to tear them down. Even though the town is foreclosing on the properties, there are appeals being filed and this thing seems to be dragging on and on. The purchase is to expedite the process, I was told by the Town Attorney. I will have a story on tonight's meeting following up on this for tomorrow morning.
