VIDEO: Flash Flooding, Power Outages Strike Manchester

A series of torrential thunderstorms tore through Manchester Friday afternoon, knocking out power and closing roads.

Torrential rains closed roads and knocked out power around Manchester Friday afternoon. 

A series of quick, heavy thunderstorms started shortly after 3 p.m. Friday, according to Fire Chief Robert Bycholski, at points producing quarter-sized hail. 

Bycholski said that between 3:20 p.m. and 5 p.m. the Manchester Fire Rescue and EMS department responded to 29 incidents.

Four roads were closed due to downed trees and wires, according to Bycholski, and three roads were closed due to flash flooding. 

Around 4:50 p.m. on Center Street near the railroad overpass, water flooded in from all directions so fast that several cars and motorists were stranded under the overpass. A police cruiser had to push one car out of the water.

Connecticut Light & Power reported that 754 customers in town, or about two percent of all electrical customers in town, were without power as of 6 p.m.

The National Weather Service is warning that heavy rains and thunderstorms could continue in town until early Saturday morning, bringing the possibility of more flooding and power outages.
