Manchester Man Charged in Attempted Machinery Theft

Incident just one of several reported throughout the state.

A Manchester man has been accused of trying to steal machinery from Farmington Valley Equipment in what police say may be part of a rash of similar incidents.

According to Farmington Police reports, someone cut through the security fence at Farmington Valley Equipment on May 27 and moved a piece of commercial power equipment so that it would be easy to steal.

Police staked out the business the next night, when Carlos Patrick Vega, 32, of 148 Edgerton St., Manchester, reportedly drove his pickup truck with a trailer into the parking lot at 2:41 a.m.

Officers and K-9 Drak found Vega hiding in nearby woods and took him into custody, charging him with criminal attempt to commit second-degree larceny, second-degree criminal mischief, second-degree criminal trespass, interfering with an officer, third-degree larceny, possession of burglar’s tools and theft of plate.

Police said that the trailer had been stolen from a business in North Haven, where a security fence had also been cut. Similar thefts and attempted thefts in several towns have been reported over the past few months.

Vega was held on $50,000 surety bond and scheduled to appear May 29, 2012.
