Injured Hiker Rescued From Case Mountain Woods

Unidentified man had fallen down an embankment while walking the trails alone.

An injured hiker who had fallen down an embankment on the Case Mountain Trail System was rescued late Monday afternoon.

More than two dozen rescue personnel from the Manchester and Glastonbury Fire Departments and the Manchester Community Emergency Response Team combined to find the man, administer emergency medical treatment and transport him to a local hospital, according to information released by Manchester Assistant Fire Chief Dave Billings.

The unidentified hiker, a 34-year-old Manchester resident, had been walking alone on the trails all afternoon when he fell down an embankment off the trail. The man was injured during the fall, but was able to call 9-1-1 from his cell phone at 4:38 p.m., Billings said.

Emergency crews arrived minutes later, and the hiker was able to describe his approximate last known location to the dispatcher. Rescue personnel deployed in teams on a 4-wheel-drive truck and on foot were able to locate the man off the white trail in the central-eastern section of the woods at 5:25 p.m., Billings said.

Fire department personnel administered emergency medical treatment to the man, and he was packaged and carried up the embankment back onto the trail. An all-terrain vehicle was used to remove the man from the woods, and he was taken by ambulance to Manchester Memorial Hospital just after 6 p.m., Billings said.

During the entire search and rescue, the hiker maintained cell phone contact with the dispatcher, which provided valuable information to the search teams. The rescue effort was hampered by the high heat and humidity, Billings said.
