Got a Tip for the Cops? Now You Can Just Text It From Your Phone

The Manchester Police Department has launched a new "Text-A-Tip Program," allowing residents who witness a crime or have information about a case to simply send a text message from a cell phone.

Helping fight crime in Manchester just got a whole lot easier.

The Manchester Police Department has launched a new "Text-A-Tip Program," in which cell phone users now have the capability to send an anonymous text message to the police 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Here's how it's done: just text TIPMPD along with the message to CRIMES (274637). Anonymous tips may also be submitted by calling 645-KLUE. The police said if you have witnessed a crime, or if you have information that might help solve a case, they want to hear from you.

"The Manchester Police Department frequently relies on the general public for help in solving criminal cases," according to a release from Manchester Matters. "The Manchester Police Department encourages all citizens to report information about any non-urgent illegal activity, such as vandalism, theft, the sale and distribution of drugs or information about crimes that are being planned."

Anyone who discovers information on MySpace, Facebook, MyLife or YouTube should anonymously text a tip to help prevent a tragedy or loss, police said.

But, if a resident wants to report an emergency or if he or she sees a crime in progress, then they should immediately call 911, police noted.
