East Catholic High School Wins State Chemistry Olympiad

East Catholic High School in Manchester, CT is proud to announce that four (4) students Alex Fernez, Alex Hill, John Mantese and Zach Schelhorn represented the school and came in first place at the State Chemistry Olympiad held at the University of Connecticut on March 20th.  Students advanced through the competition by first taking a 75 minute multiple choice Chemistry Exam.  Students who scored the best then moved on to round two (2) which was a 50 minute essay exam followed by round three (3) which was an 80 minute lab practical. Close to 200 students from around the state competed in this Olympiad.  The primary goals of this program are to stimulate interest and achievement in chemistry among high school students throughout the United States and to recognize outstanding young chemistry students, teachers and schools.

The highest scoring students from throughout the nation will be selected to participate in a two-week intensive training camp in Colorado to prepare for this summer’s International Chemistry Olympiad in Vietnam.
