Meet Lutz College Intern Sarah Ribeiro

The Lutz Children's Museum has a staff of twelve, plus seventy-five active volunteers and a few very hardworking college interns.

Sarah Ribeiro is one of several college students spending part of their summer at the Lutz Children’s Museum. Their internships are designed to give them real world experience in their chosen fields while helping the museum to accomplish its mission.

Sarah is a graduate of East Hartford High School and currently attends Emmanuel College in Boston. She is studying English Communication with a double minor in Photography and Theater Arts. She will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in May of 2013 and a goal of pursuing print or photo journalism.

Sarah will spend 100 hours at the museum over the course of the summer as an intern in the marketing department. Her primary role is to help the museum better utilize social media to spread the word about their art, history, and science programs for young children. She will also lend a hand with the museum’s Farm Day event on Sept. 3.

Sarah said that she approached the museum about an internship because she wanted to hone her writing skills in a place that was comfortable and supportive.  “The staff and volunteers here are like a family,” she said.

Sarah started her internship by surveying other museums around the country to find out how they use social media. She summarized her findings in a “best practices” guide, which the museum will use to continue to grow their social media presence. Readers can see her work when they visit the museum at (www.facelook.com/LutzMuseum) and Twitter (www.twitter.com/LutzMuseum).

“We have been amazed by Sarah’s accomplishments,” said Bob Eckert, Executive Director at the Lutz Children’s Museum. “She is tremendously hard working and productive. She has taught us a lot about harnessing the power of social media. We hope that she has gained some valuable work experience too,” he added.

Sarah also seems to be pretty hard working and successful outside her internship.  She is scheduled to graduate from college a year early, and still manages time to work as a dancer, college radio DJ and journalist, and the director of an a cappella music group.

Sarah says that she is enjoying her internship at the Lutz Children’s Museum but she is also looking forward to getting back to college. “Boston is a great city and there is always something to do,” she said.

The staff at the museum wishes Sarah success in school and beyond. The museum often has internships available for college students wishing to gain experience.  Opportunities are available in the museum’s education, animal care, and collections departments.http://patch.com/A-kndQContact Joanna Snyder at (860-643-0949 x.13) or jsnyder@lutzmuseum.org for more information.
