Dealing Out Sexism? I Think Not...

Ladies, worried about sexism at car dealerships? Read on to find out why you have nothing to fear...

While surfing the web recently, I stumbled upon another blog: “Do car dealers treat women like second-class citizens?” You can read it here.

Let me give you the gist of the piece. The author cites Alice Hissler, a PhD scientist at the University of Michigan. She talks about her car-buying experience, and basically says she felt like she was discriminated against at the dealership because she’s a woman. The author then hits us with some numbers from a recent study: women now account for 51% of the cars purchased in the U.S. and influence 96% of sales.

I’m going to declare shenanigans on those who assume sales “guys” are able to pull one over on women who are in the market for a vehicle. Granted – I’m basing my argument on what I’ve seen here at Carter Chevy and Mazda of Manchester. But work with me.

First of all, women see right through B.S. You show a man a new Corvette and you’ve got his engine so hot and bothered that he’s drooling on the optional leather seats. “$45-grand…whatever…does it come in BLACK?”

Women, on the other hand, will smack their husbands on the back of the head and point out that the Bose surround sound system isn’t exactly a necessity…and that there’s no way the car-seat will fit in the back. (Disclaimer: I personally think a newborn would really appreciate hearing Jack Johnson in high-def…and I’m pretty sure we can squeeze the kid in there.)

I’d also like to point out how many women work at dealerships. Do you really think they’d put up with sales guys walking all over the ladies who are considering buying? I think not. They are the girlfriends, fiancées, wives, and moms that keep us in line 24/7.

The point? When you have a dealership like Carter of Manchester that’s built on integrity, there are no surprises. It doesn’t matter if you’re a man or woman…black or white...young or old…you are welcome here. We’ll treat you with the respect you deserve…because we wouldn’t want to be treated any other way.
