Long Time Organizations Work Together to Celebrate Women!

When two long-standing arts organizations get together – it's a cultural win-win for everyone!

The Manchester Art Association was established in 1950. The Little Theatre of Manchester was established in 1960. Together, with more than 100 years of being engaged in the cultural arts it certainly gives their combined efforts a great deal of credence and interest!

In June, the MAA will display a wide variety of art celebrating women artists or the images of woman in conjunction with LTM's production of The Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler.

From June 8 until the 24, twelve specially-selected pieces of art will be showcased in the theater to be seen by patrons of the show, which will be held cabaret style.  With food and drink to purchase, this will surely be a celebration on many levels!  Other art work submitted, but not selected for the 'grand hall' will be on display in Cheney Hall's lower-level Silk Room.

While many members of MAA work from home or in the great outdoors, some have rented out workspace at the corner of Pitkin and Center Streets in what is now known as Gallery East and Studio.

Olivia Golas, along with her partners Sara Reid and Terri Butler, and soon others, enjoy the well lit, but cozy space on whose walls find a beautiful array of paintings from classical to modern, miniatures on tiny easels and space for meetings and for the public to enjoy – and buy!

Carolyn Gimbrone, president of the MAA, took me on a tour of this sweet little studio and was able to show me one of the paintings that is planned to be submitted for the Cheney Hall showing.

Based on what this amateur "artist" saw in that one small space, one can only imagine what a wonderful variety of art will be on display in June . . . and we look forward to the art – both on the floor and on the stage!

The Vagina Monolgues will be directed by Debi Freund with a cast of very diverse and talented women. Eve Ensler will be visiting Cheney Hall for special on-stage presentation on Sunday, May 6. Tickets to the play and to the Ensler event are available at the , 177 Hartford Rd., Manchester, 860-647-9824.
