Always Something New Around the Corner

Walking the Road Race the first time, Joyce enjoyed what she found around each corner!

My favorite new line is, "it seems so much shorter when you drive it." That was said outloud as my daughter and I walked the Manchester Road Race this past week.

It not only seemed so obvious, but we just laughed out loud when we realized how silly it was.

This was my first time walking. I did it to raise money for the Padbury Milk Fund of the Manchester Food Pantry through the Rotary Club of Manchester Club. So, dressed in our special maroon colored t-shirts, we Rotarians started our four-mile walk and I watched those commrades get smaller and smaller in view as I slipped further and further behind.

I know it didn't matter how long it took me to walk, it was the good intent and the fun of doing it with my daughter that was key to my success that day.

The killer hill near Highland Park Market loomed large and I kept focused on people older and broader than me with the "if they can do it, so can I" attitude.

Once we headed downhill on Porter, my feet still hurt, but my hip pain lessened, and then we heard the music of several groups, some polka, some brass, and some rock and roll.  That really got us motivated and we did a little dancing to Michael Jackson as we got closer to the corner of Center and Main streets.

What a treat to find those musicians along the route, and the people who stood there for hours waiting and watching and cheering us on!

Yes, by the time I crossed that finish line (1 hour and 47 minutes) and my daughter and I had our photo taken, I realized that this was something that I'd do again – for the milk fund, but also for what I'd find next year, around the corner.
