“You Sound Less Dishonest than Everyone Else”

I was taken completely by surprise. My first reaction was to just hang up, as this is no way to start a business relationship, let alone any relationship. This is what I got after 5 minutes into the conversation.

So, why would you say anything so mean spirited I asked? In the last 20 years, my dealings with everyone that I have met in the real estate and mortgage business have not been a pleasant experience. So, in the last 20 years, everyone that you have worked with in the real estate and mortgage industry has taken advantage of you? He said let’s just say it wasn’t pretty.

Why would you be willing to give me an opportunity to work with you? He said, you’ve done mortgages for two of my friends and they say you’re good people. Yes, but I’m one of them? He then asked me the critical questions. Are you saying that because I told you the truth about my beliefs that you don’t want to work with me?

Here is the question that I asked him. Have you and I ever worked together before? Of course he answered no. So then I said, since we haven’t worked together before, I don’t want to be judged by what someone else may have done or said.

I gave him credit for answering as follows. You are asking a lot, but I’ll give it a shot. OK, then I’m willing to work with you.

We have an obligation to let others know that we shouldn’t judge others because of past experiences.  I will do everything humanly possible to give him a good experience so that some of his prejudices might go away.
