I couldn’t refuse the request, as these folks have been clients of mine for the last 20 years. Just a little background, their son was a college graduate and has been looking for work in his field for over a year. He has been working at Home Depot on a part time basis for the last few months.
Pleasant young man and you could tell he was nervous, but he was committed to seeing this lunch through and pleasing his parents. I wanted to take some of the pressure off him so started asking lots of questions. We talked about his parents, his education, his frustration about not finding a job in his field of education, taking a job at Home Depot and then real estate.

I wanted to know, who came up with the real estate idea. He told me that he started watching some of the real estate related shows on TV and decided MAYBE that would be a good idea for him.

After about 45 minutes of conversation it was time to give him some of the realities of the real estate business. Since I was a Realtor at one time in my life I could speak about my experience. I spent about 30 minutes telling him how I got into the business and the passion I had, the commitment I had to becoming the best agent on the planet and hard work and hours it took to accomplish my goals.
After listening to me, he told me that is how he felt about biology which was his field of education and said that one thing that our lunch did was renew his passion to look that much harder to find work in his chosen field. He then told me that the one thing that he will need to discuss with his parents is looking for a job far away from where he grow up, which will hurt his parents, but it was time. I asked him if he wanted me to speak to his parents, Aaron said, this was his responsibility.
All and all, I got my job done and hope that Aaron finds his path sooner rather than later.
