Many years ago, my wife and I took a course on communication. Actually, I thought it was a course about listening. I have no idea what possessed us to take the course, since I always professed being an outstanding listener. I quickly leaned, not so much.
This weekend course was done at Cambridge University of all places. I remember sitting in my seat listening to Jane talk about listening, I was immediately uncomfortable but had no idea as to why. By the first break in the first morning, I was in tears.
I remember getting out of my seat, going on to the stage and giving Jane a hug. She looked at me and said, “I understand.”
From that day on, I became committed to listening. I don’t remember any other seminar or learning that has had more impact on my life. The greatest gift you can give another human being is to truly listen to them. There is no room for being right, when the other person knows they are being heard.
