Seniors: Home bound? How About a Nutritious Meal?

Many seniors have limited means of getting out and moving around the community and are virtually homebound. Preparing meals can be a problem for the senior as well as for caregivers. Meals on Wheels, a program of the Community Renewal Team, may be the answer. CRT provides daily meals to seniors over 60 years of age who are homebound. The meals are nutritious and inexpensive- a donation of $2 per meal is suggested but seniors who cannot afford that will not be refused.  Lunches and dinners are delivered daily (every day or just a couple of days as ordered) by a senior volunteer driver from CRT. One of the requirements is that the driver actually greet the senior to make sure everything is ok. This daily social contact can mean a lot to the homebound and can be reassuring to family caregivers as well. According to the CRT website, qualified seniors must:

  • Be 60 years of age or older
  • Be unable to eat at a community meal site
  • Be assessed by staff as ‘homebound

For information or to make a referral contact Caroline at CRT: Telephone: (860) 560-5828 or on line at the CRT web site.
The referral can come from the senior, caregivers, health personnel or the family.
