Finally the Campaign in Manchester Livens Up!

The Republican Sports Complex Proposal and Library Expansion Issue inject some excitement into the campaign.

Just when I thought this year’s municipal campaign was going to be a dull, apathetic slog, the Republicans have injected some life into it with a . Then the Save the Park group announces a litmus test for Director candidates. They want a one issue campaign based on which candidates will side with them in their quest to prevent  the expansion of Mary Cheney Library. Finally some real issues to discuss.

A Sports Complex for the Parkade?

Here’s a creative idea for the Redevelopment Commission to consider. The Commission has done some great work but appears to be stalled in attracting a developer for the mixed use residential/commercial complex they envision. What is the harm in looking at this? Although it was immediately dismissed as a political move by the Democrat Chairman, it’s a serious idea worthy of serious consideration. After all, the Chairman did say recently: “We believe that there isn't a Democratic or Republican way to operate the Library, redevelop Broad Street…each idea was heard and decided upon based on merit, not who proposed it.” Huh? To dismiss it as a political move is counter productive. How about: “That’s an interesting idea. Let’s look at it.” A Democrat candidate has been promoting the idea of an indoor track. Here’s chance to work together in a bipartisan fashion!

Library Expansion Proposal

Then we have the Save the Park, anti-Mary Cheney Library Expansion group attempting to intimidate candidates into changing the Board’s decision to expand Mary Cheney Library. Director candidates: What is your stand on the library? Be careful how you answer. One of their survey questions is: “Will you consider a ‘genuine’ study without bias?” It sounds like the old trick question: “when did you stop beating your wife?”  I.e., they are saying the original Board of Directors vote was not “genuine” and was “biased.” The Save the Park group wants to know your stand, but  beware there is only one correct answer and if you don’t pass the test you are toast in their eyes!

This may be an interesting, invigorating campaign after all. This is real democracy in action. Ideas floated, discussed and candidates taking a stand. – perhaps more than 30 percent of our voters may turn out after all.
