Learn about this candidate for the Manchester Board of Directors.

Full name: Mark Tweedie

Education (colleges/degrees): Manchester High School graduate; U.S. Naval School of Dental Technology;  New York University, Master of Dental Technology

Work: Owner, Tweedie Dental Arts ,LLC.

Why do you want to be on the Manchester Board of Directors?  I grew up here in Manchester, and except for the 6 years I served in the military, I have lived here since birth.  I remember the neighborhoods of my friends, the wonderful local stores and restaurants, vibrant downtown, Broad Street and Parkade areas. We have all the elements to make Manchester a town that is affordable, has great schools, and has jobs and industry to help support the cost of town services.  I want to make Manchester a better place to live and do business.  I want to be re-elected to a fourth term to continue to work hard to make sure that Manchester’s future is as bright as its past.

What experience do you bring to the table? I am a taxpayer, small business owner and family man who has worked hard to manage and control expenses and stay within a budget in my personal life as well as in my role as Town Director for the past six years.  I pledge to taxpayers that I will continue to scrutinize all town expenditures as if they were my own personal budget.  I want to hold the line on taxes and make sure that we have strong schools and town services.  I will continue to work hard to develop new sources of tax revenue through economic development to reduce the tax burden on homeowners.  I have also served on the SMARTR committee and am committed to implementing an affordable long-term plan for a high quality 21st century education for all children.

What do you think the town's most pressing issue is? The most important issue in this town is the same issue that our entire state and our country is facing right now: High rates of unemployed, decreasing tax dollars to support government services and programs and a bleak outlook for job creation. The answer to this is simple but the solution is not easy. We need to demand that our town budget has a zero spending increase. We need to fill our industrial parks  and commercial buildings with businesses who can employ our residents.  We need to welcome new businesses and work with them as they grow their companies. As a small business owner and an experienced Town Director I will continue to work to make this happen. A strong business community is needed because it contributes substantial tax dollars without requiring significant town services.  Homeowners alone cannot possibly shoulder the cost of strong schools and other town services so important to our community.

What do you love most about Manchester? Manchester is truly the city of village charm. The parks, walking trails, historic neighborhoods, the road race, the beautiful gardens maintained by volunteers of the garden and perennial clubs, the parades, the friendly, proud residents, I could go on and on.  As I told my wife when I convinced her to raise our family here, if its not in Manchester, you don’t need it.

What do you like to do for fun? I like spending time in the woods with my wife and dog and we also love to travel to national parks, hiking and any type of activity on water including canoeing and kayaking.  I have had fun working with youth sports organizations for many years.
