UPDATED: Moose Struck and Killed by Car in Manchester

A young male moose was struck and killed by a car on Interstate 384 in town early Friday morning, according to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, but the passenger of the vehicle was not injured.

A young moose was sighted wandering through parts of Manchester and Vernon on Thursday. It is unclear if it was the same moose, but DEEP Spokesman Dennis Schain said that it likely was the same animal.

"There's no way to be 100 percent sure, but there's not that many moose in the Manchester area," Schain said.

The accident occurred near exit four of the highway around 4 a.m.

Schain said the motorist was "very fortunate" not to be injured in the collusion, because moose are so large and bulky that they typically fall in through the windshield when hit by a car.

The DEEP was attempting to tranquilize and relocate the moose on Thursday, but Schain said officials "never got within a good range" to do so.

"It's certainly a sad end to an intriguing tale," he said.
