Cassano 'Stands Down'

State Sen. Steve Cassano was among the attendees of the annual Stand Down event at the Connecticut Veterans Home in Rocky Hill Friday.

State Sen. Steve Cassano, D-Manchester, shakes hands with Stanley Brown of Manchester, one of thousands who attended the  event at the Connecticut Veterans Home in Rocky Hill on September 9, 2011.

The annual event offered veterans benefits information at the state and federal level, employment and educational assistance, medical screenings, legal and motor vehicle assistance, and various federal, state and local agencies providing assistance with food, clothing, haircuts, child support, debt adjustment, mental health treatment, financial counseling, and other services.

Moments earlier, Sen. Cassano had addressed the crowd, saying "The
numbers are astounding, how many veterans don't have access to basic human services. I look forward to the day when this won't have to be an annual event."
