You Are What You Eat!

Staying healthy depends on every choice you make about food. Buying local foods, fresh foods, can make a big difference.

Five years ago Manchester Community College made a commitment to connect with local farmers and vendors in an effort to serve as a conduit for bringing people together on campus to support and to help sustain local agriculture.

The MCC Farmers’ Market was born and now continues every Wednesday afternoon from 1.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m., located at the Manchester Bicentennial Band Shell. Our goal and our mission is to bring together people in our communities who shared this same idea and would like to buy products from and support Connecticut farmers.

At the same time, there is another issue that cannot be overlooked. That is:

You are what you eat! Each day we are bombarded with ads telling us to buy products that "may" be healthy for us. However, when you visit any supermarket you can tell, after reading most labels, this is no longer real food.

Michael Pollan, often writes about the dangers of eating these "food-like substances" and advises us this way: if there are more than five ingredients on the label, it is processed and no longer the food pictured on the box, so put it back on the shelf.

At the MCC Farmers’ Market (and at any farmers’ market) the opposite is true.

You are buying REAL food, with no processing, that contains more nutrition than any boxed food can provide, without the added chemicals, excess sugar and excess sodium. In short: the REAL FOOD.  That is what becoming a localvore is all about. Buying unprocessed, real food, with only excess nutrition instead of the many chemical additives. (my personal favorite is red dye #2).

Eat Well… Stay Healthy!
