Manchester Resident to Help Rocky Hill Library Go to the Dogs Tuesday Night

Phil Klein, a certified dog listener, will answer questions on how to improve your canine's behavior.

A program at the  in Rocky Hill Tuesday night will teach canine owners how to better communicate with their dogs and improve their animal's behavior – and it will all be thanks to a Manchester resident.

About six and half years ago, certified dog listener Phil Klein and his wife adopted a Shepherd and Labrador Retriever mix named Abby. However, the animal was an “emotional mess” and at times, hard to control.

“It was the dog we didn’t want but, we didn’t have the heart to send her back,” he said.

Klein, who was involved in the automobile industry, tried several options to fix his pooch’s behavior, but none of them worked until he discovered dog listening.

“Dog listening made her right.”

Klein, who lives in Manchester, will teach the audience pack leadership skills, which dogs already know.

“It is how dogs communicate with each other.”

The skills will help make the owner the leader of the pack in his or her household and make the dog follow his or her commands.

The "" program has been previously offered at the Manchester, West Hartford and Wethersfield libraries. Klein will be hosting his program at libraries in Colchester and Marlborough in the near future.

“Us dog listeners want you to have the information,” he said.

People are asked to bring their questions, but dogs should be left at home. Klein said he will try to answer as “many questions as possible.”

The event will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Stepney room.

The event is free of charge. Anyone interested in participating in the program, should register by calling 860-258-7623 or by visiting the library’s website.
