"5 Things You Need to Know About..." Budgets, Budgets and More Budgets

It's a budget themed day locally for Wednesday, March 9.

1. General Manager Scott Shanley presented his $163,938,616 for the 2011-12 fiscal year to the Board of Directors yesterday. Shanley's proposal is a 1.8 percent increase over the town’s current budget, and calls for a 2.9 percent increase in the mill rate and the use of $1.5 million from the town’s reserves.

The board will now spend the better part of the next month reviewing, and possibly altering, Shanley's budget before voting to approve a finalized version for the coming fiscal year in mid-April.

2. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has a stop planned in town Wednesday to discuss - you guessed it - his proposed state budget for the coming fiscal year. Malloy will speak to two Manchester Community College classes about his proposed budget, including a proposal to reorganization the community college and regional university systems, and then take questions.

Malloy will be present from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Community Commons Room on the second floor of the Great Path Academy building, located on the campus of Manchester Community College.

3. In that same room Tuesday evening, Connecticut Banking Commissioner Howard F. Pitkin held a about a proposed merger between First Niagara Financial Group and NewAlliance Bank. Guess what they deal with a lot at banks - that's right, budgets!

For all the sturm und drang surrounding the proposed merger, and the 219 positions it would eliminate, including 93 in Manchester, the meeting was actually pretty tame.

4. We owe congratulations to the East Catholic boys hockey team, who claimed the Saturday with a 6-1 win over Farmington! And we owe thanks to the friends and family of the team who got us the details of the game and a picture!

5. And come on bro', if you're gonna give a fake name to a cop, you should at least know how to . That's not winning.
