Illing Middle School is proud to announce the addition of a Unified Sports program, which partners with the Special Olympics, to the wide variety of extra curricular activities that the students have the opportunity to participate in. This program was made possible through the Project UNIFY Grant that was awarded to the school at the beginning of the year. Ms. Greco, a Health and Physical Education teacher at the school, applied for the grant in hopes to help create a more positive school climate and to provide opportunities for all students to participate in competitive sports. Through Project UNIFY, Illing plans to activate youth, engage educators, and promote school communities of acceptance and inclusion where all young people are agents of change. By utilizing the sports and education initiatives of Special Olympics, Project UNIFY at Illing will foster feelings of respect and dignity for people with intellectual disabilities and change the actions and attitudes among their peers without intellectual disabilities. Illing Middle School plans to be competitive this year in indoor soccer, basketball, volleyball, bowling, and track and field.
On October 24th, Illing had two teams consisting of 19 students, 9 athletes and 10 partners, travel to Avon for an indoor soccer tournament. Each team competed against three different schools. Throughout each event, both teams showed enthusiasm, courage, bravery and an amazing display of team unity. All their hard work during practice paid off in the games as Illing’s teams brought home a gold medal and a silver medal. Illing is very proud of all the participants involved and is very excited to start preparing for our next event. Go Illing!!!
